EMCDDA Director pays official visit to Athens drug consumption room

Today, EMCDDA Director Alexis Goosdeel is paying an official visit to a new drug consumption room (DCR) in Athens, set up by the Organisation Against Drugs (OKANA) (1).

The first Greek DCR was established by OKANA in Athens in 2013, following a surge in infectious diseases among drug users. DCRs aim to reduce the transmission of drug-related infections and prevent overdoses by providing users with sterile injecting equipment and a medically-supervised setting for drug use.

This initiative is closely aligned with EMCDDA Strategy 2025. The agency aims to support interventions to reduce drug use, prevent drug-related harms and support recovery and social reintegration.
